Excursions
Fürstenstand Lookout Point on the Plabutsch
Enjoy the beautiful hiking paths from Gösting, Eggenberg or Thal up to the Fürstenstand (elev. 764m, the highest point in Graz), with its unique views of the provincial capital.
Directions: Coming by car along the Steinbergstrasse, turn right at the last bend onto Kollerbergweg. Drive straight ahead for 5km and then you will see the restaurant in front of you.
Stübing Open-Air Museum
Some 100 original historical buildings from across Austria, many of them from farms, have been carefully relocated to the Stübing Open-Air Museum. The farmhouses and farm buildings are grouped by province, allowing you to enjoy a leisurely walk through the history of Austria’s rich farming culture, from Burgenland to Vorarlberg.
Rein Abbey
Rein Abbey was founded in 1129 under the Cistercian Order. Because the abbeys which had been founded prior to Rein were dissolved over the course of history, Rein stands today as the oldest existing Cistercian abbey in the entire world. At a time when St. Bernhard was still alive, this abbey was endowed by Margrave Leopold I of Steyer. The abbey stands 15 km north-west of Graz in a side valley of the Mur near Gratwein. The Rein Abbey we see today is, for the most part, a typical Austrian abbey of the Baroque period, though wonderful finds from the Middle Ages have come to light during recent renovations.
